Vocal fold paralysis in subacute thyroiditis.

چکیده
Vocal fold paralysis is associated with involvement of the vagus nerve or the recurrent laryngeal nerve between the jugular foramen and the entry point into the larynx. Malignancies of the thyroid are a frequent cause, but vocal fold paralysis is also found in certain benign diseases. In a series of 1,200 cases, the incidence of the association between paralysis and benign thyroid disease was 0.69%. In this paper we report a case of vocal fold paralysis associated with a benign thyroid condition.

متن کاملReversible recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy in acute thyroiditis.
First reported by Nager in 1927, unilateral vocal cord paralysis associated with thyroid disease suggests the malignant and irreversible nature of the thyroid lesion. This condition is rarely seen in benign thyroid diseases, and the function of the vocal cord does not usually return. We present a 54-year-old woman with a history of right hemithyroidectomy for benign thyroid nodule, who had an e...
متن کاملImpaired vocal cord mobility in the setting of acute suppurative thyroiditis.
BACKGROUND Acute suppurative thyroiditis is an increasingly rare entity, accounting for less than 0.1% of thyroid surgery. This is the first report in the literature of acute thyroiditis causing a unilateral reversible vocal cord paralysis. METHODS A 41-year-old woman was initially seen with a unilateral vocal cord paralysis resulting from acute suppurative thyroiditis. RESULTS The vocal co...
متن کاملA rare case of Reidel thyroiditis with associated vocal cord paralysis: CT and MR imaging features.
Reidel thyroiditis is extremely rare and not only involves the thyroid gland but usually extends to neighboring structures in the neck. A rare complication of this disease is entrapment of the recurrent laryngeal nerve causing a vocal cord paralysis. In fact, to our knowledge, this is likely the only benign thyroid disease to cause such a paralysis. We present a case of a 57-year-old woman with...
متن کاملVocal fold deposits in macrophagic myofasciitis.
Macrophagic myofasciitis was first reported in 1998. This disease manifests as diffuse myalgia and chronic fatigue. Its pathophysiology has been traced to the presence of an aluminum adjuvant used in vaccines against hepatitis A and B virus and tetanus toxoid; the adjuvant aggregates at the site of injection. One-third of patients with macrophagic myofasciitis develop autoimmune disease. Vocal ...
